Some Strange Happenings Going On Is It Because My House is Haunted?

You're lying in bed after a hard day at work trying to sleep. Everything is quiet except for the worries in your mind. Finally, after tossing and turning for an hour, you're just about asleep when you hear a strange eerie creak. At this moment, maybe all the childhood stories you heard about ghosts, goblins and poltergeists flood your mind. Perhaps this is a relief from the worries of everyday life.

Then a groan. Was it the heater? The wind? Or your imagination?

You get the sense that you're being watched. Quickly you sit up; your senses are on full alert straining to understand. You spend the night tossing and turning.

The following three nights the noises and feelings continue. Keys turn up missing; doors are open in the morning that you were sure you closed. You feel cold when you open your bedroom closet. A couple of times you felt as if you'd been touched.

You wonder if your house is haunted as thoughts of strange apparitions fill your mind you wonder if you're going crazy or if your imagination is running wild?

Signs Your House May Be Haunted

OK, so at this point you're wondering if you should be calling a ghosthunter or perhaps even a psychiatrist, maybe both. You know you're not crazy, so your house must be haunted.

How do you know?

There are some distinctive signs that your house may be haunted.

Before you make the decision your house is haunted and you need to spend a fortune on ghosts-hunters, remember that despite sophisticated electronic detection devices, camera equipment and the large number of amateur and professional ghost-hunters all trying to prove ghosts exists, no indisputable scientific evidence exists.

Here are signs that your house may be haunted:

  • Unexplained Noises - Footsteps, strange creaks, groans, moans, things being dropped, doors opening, howling, crying and all manner of strange noises. Be careful though, many unexplained noises can actually be explained. Houses, especially older ones make noises as they settle. Plumbing, animals and the wind traveling through cracks or openings in walls, floors and windows.
  • Doors Opening and Closing - Cabinet, closet or bedroom doors that open and close mysteriously. Possible explanations: the wind, or perhaps you even forgot that you left a certain door open or closed it. Before you convince yourself perhaps you should ask a magician how easy a person's mind can be fooled.
  • Lights Turning On and Off
  • Things Appearing and Disappearing - Familiar objects that you use daily are misplaced, or simply disappear for days then are found someplace that you would never have thought of placing them. If this is a true haunting, as some ghosts can be quite malicious the item may be missing for weeks, or months before reappearing. Again, this could be everyday forgetfulness, so one should rule out natural occurrences.
  • Strange Smells, or Feelings of Being Touched
  • Unexplained Shadows - Often these shadows appear moving through walls or are seen through the corner of an eye.
  • Cold or Hot Spots - Spots in your house are noticeably hotter or colder, considerably hotter or colder, like 10- 20 degrees. Or rapid, extreme and unexplained changes in air temperature
  • Sudden Changes in Mood - Ghosts can effect moods and personalities of people in the haunted house. Changes in mood could be caused by other mental, physical or personal issues, ghosts can alter a persons mood.
  • The Real Deal, PolterGeist Phenomena - There is little doubt about a Poltergiest. This is an undeniable haunting. Objects move or levitate in plain view; physical assaults occur or apparitions appear.

If your house is haunted, all of these signs are not going to be experienced, because all hauntings are different. If you feel your house is haunted getting in touch with an expert is a good idea.

Be careful though as you would with any expert, ask questions. Ask about qualifications and ask for references. I checked a couple of ghost hunter sites here in Indiana and one of the better known ones had a list of investigations they conducted and their initial investigation was free.

What Can I Do If My House is Haunted?

If you've determined your house is haunted there is a couple of things you need to do.

  1. Rule Out Rational Explanations - OK, it's still a good idea even if you've determined your house is haunted to continue to look for rational explanations. Remember the mind is easily fooled.
  2. Keep a Journal - Record times, what you were doing when you noticed the unexplained incidents. Be as detailed as possible.
  3. Try to Record Any Strange Noises - if it does become necessary to hire ghosthunters or paranormal investigators, recordings of strange noises and the journal of when and where they took place will help their investigation.
  4. Photographs - Try to get pictures or videos of any strange phenomena.
  5. Call the Experts - Surprisingly it isn't all that difficult to find a group of ghosthunters in your area, at least if your near a major city. Just make sure they have experience and know what they're doing.

A well-written, well-researched hub I can soooo relate to! The list of places I've lived that were truly haunted is quite long. Lights going off and on when no one (but me!) was awake, a polite ghost who'd knock on the door at the bottom of the stairs to the attic, another one who liked to turn on the blender around 3 a.m., even after it was unplugged!. Those were the "nice" ones.

The place I'm living now I thought at first was haunted, too. Sounded like a cabinet door slamming in the middle of the night, and what sounded like footsteps in the kitchen. It all turned out to be a really weird fridge that does its self-defrosting thing late at night. What sounded like a cabinet door slamming is the sound it makes when the mechanism first kicks on, and the "footsteps" are only pieces of ice dropping down inside the back to the melting-evaporation tray underneath. But even tho I KNOW what it is, it'll still make me jump sometimes if I happen to be on the computer or just awake when it happens!

btw, I never called anybody in or did anything about the ghosts in the previous places. We just got used to having them around. ;D

Wow! Love to hear more about the haunted house. I've never experienced this phenomena, but always wondered if there were truly ghosts? I mean after all so many not only believe but have seen or experienced them, like yourself! Again thanks for reading and should you need a good ghost-hunter, well perhaps that should be one of my next hubs!

Really, the ghosts I've actually seen weren't all that scary. Two (different ghosts, in different places) were men walking across hallways that I just happened to be in sight of. A bit unsettling but no big deal. Really. ;D

Still though it does show that they exist. Do you ever feel that people don;t believe you?

I like your hub, kept me interested and intrigued. : ) I did see a real ghost once as a girl. It was of my dead great-grandfather, sitting on the bed at my grandparents house, with his hands covering his face in despair. It was frightening. My younger sister saw him too, as we both ran from the room screaming.

Thanks for the comment, Glad you found it interesting! Must have have been scary to see a ghost. I have never seen one, but found the idea intriguing. Good Luck with hubpages!

Waking to find a ghost sitting on the bed *would* be frightening to a child. That said, some will find it strange that I wasn't frightened at all as an adult either time my father appeared to me in the middle of the night. Rather, it was comforting, and both times I simply smiled, muttered something like "Hey, Dad", rolled over and went right back to sleep.

Nor was I frightened by the ghosts I saw in various homes I lived in. Granted, the experience was always a bit startling, even interesting, but never frightening.

Although I've never felt a "presence" where I now live, there *have* been a few noises I can't attribute to appliances or the odd mouse. Didn't think much about them until I was looking at pix I took Christmas Eve and noticed several orbs that couldn't be dust or water spots on the camera lens. The same "orbs" (which I'd never noticed before) appear in pix of the same corner of the room taken a couple of months ago. This happens to be the part of the room where I store family history files, so the orbs may be nothing more than dead ancestors coming out to "play". (That's my story and I'm sticking to it...) ;D

Interesting! I really have wanted to experience something like a ghost, but never have. Perhaps it is that some people, like yourself are especially attuned to ghosts, or spirits. That may be why you have experienced them in several homes. I answered an add on craigslist once for ghost hunters and talked to the individual, that's what they seemed to believe too. Wanted to actually participate, but they traveled a lot and didn't realize that it would be on my dime, expensive hobby.

Take care!

I grew up in a house that I swear was haunted, but I've only ever lived in one other house that felt haunted since (and I've lived in quite a few houses in my life.) The house I grew up in was interesting-- living there I experienced flickering lights, footsteps on the gravel outside, knocks on the door, doors flying open, strange voices (that even the dog would hear and bark at) etc. The other house just had one very scary haunting-type thing that would happen-- The downstairs door would open, heavy footsteps would cross the floor, the bathroom sink would turn on, the sliding glass door would open, almost like someone was walking through the downstairs doing these things, but it would happen all the time, especially when no one was there and sometimes even when you're standing downstairs in the middle of it. (very, very creepy.)

GGT, there's a theory that everyone has the ability to connect to the "other side" if they really want to, but it's been my experience that being sensitive to other dimensions is not a universal trait.

You're a perfect example. You'd *really* like to experience it, but never have. At least you admit to the possibility, unlike many who flatly deny the existence of ghosts *because* they've never seen (or heard or felt) one. I liken that attitude to denying NPR exists because one's radio isn't tuned to the right station (and probably never will be...in this lifetime, at least).

If it's any consolation, I supposedly inherited the ability from my paternal grandmother, as did a second cousin. Personally, I don't think genetics can be totally responsible for this "talent". Rather I think it's the age of one's soul...i.e. "old" souls seem to be more attuned to, and aware of, the unseen than "young" ones. But it sounds like you might be getting close. Maybe in your next life? ;D

I truly enjoyed this hub. I currently live in the house I grew up in, that I owned with my parents before they had passed away. My parents and my aunt, whom had lived here when I was a child, are still here. There is also a young girl of about seven years old, that seems to frequent the house. She has awakened me several times asking for a drink of water in the middle of the night.

There are also two that are still here, presumably the male that was killed in my house before we bought it in 1986, and possibly his child or another male child somehow tied to the home (no research available on any other children that have died in the home matching his age/description), that are not friendly. The adult male has a tendency to move things you are looking for, often replacing them after you have given up all hope of finding them. He has also shoved my husband down the stairs twice since he moved in five years ago. The male child, approximately twelve years of age, is a prankster whose pranks often result in injuries to those being pranked.

My son, Giovanni (four years old), often talks to my parents and laughs saying "Bobby, you're so silly." My mom and aunts called my dad "Bobby", but no one else ever has, and my parents passed away before I even became pregnant with my son. He also refers to them as being the seventeen and nineteen year old versions of themselves, not the older versions he tells those around us who are ill that "(they) are going to go visit Bobby and Mary at their older person house, but (he) can't go there because it's too far away."

My mom, sister, and I all appear to have a "gift" for the "supernatural" and can honestly tune in to other, feeling their emotions and pain. I do believe this tends to be inherited, but like JamaGenee stated, it tends to be also "the age of one's soul," with older souls more likely to be able to harness this ability than those with younger souls.

I wish you the best, and truly enjoyed this read. Voted up + Interesting.

Wow! I believe to that some people just have the gift to see ghosts, see what others can't see. I think if we all could sense ghosts, we would see that they are more prevalent than we believe.

Thanks for stopping by and good luck here on hubpages!

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee Level 8 Commenter 4 months ago

GGT, I think you're right. If everyone could sense (even see) ghosts and know how prevalent they really are, the "supernatural" wouldn't be considered "super" - meaning "outside of" - and the ability to communicate with spirits wouldn't be so "woo woo". ;D

GoGreenTips profile image

GoGreenTips Hub Author 4 months ago

We often give terms such as super, like you said to things we don't understand. Perhaps supernatural would become natural. Many cultures took spirits as a fact, it wasn't until the religions of today forced their way into the scene and basically eliminated any competition did we become shall we say uncomfortable with spirits and the spirit world.

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee Level 8 Commenter 4 months ago

Good point! Spirits (usually) aren't controllable from this side and therefore it behooves "modern" religions to make people feel uncomfortable about them. Never mind Christianity is based on believing that Jesus slipped through a rock wall and ascended into heaven. Doesn't get much more "super" and woo-woo than that, but gawdforbid a non-follower calls them on that point. lol!

GoGreenTips Hub Author 4 months ago

Great point about Jesus! If there is another side, then wouldn't all of us have some part of us that is spirit matter? JamaGenee, where about in central Oklahoma? My daughter, grown, lives in central Oklahoma, Norman. I was stationed at Altus Afb, for a couple of years.

JamaGenee profile image

JamaGenee Level 8 Commenter 4 months ago

Good one! Not that I dare mention such a concept to the "Jesus is the ONLY acceptable super-spirit" crowd in my neighborhood unless I want to be shopping for a whole new set of tires some morning. (I'm "just down the road" from Norman, near Tecumseh.)

Nice share, spirits live in houses. What we should be asking is if these beings are good or bad. Restless ones tend to haunt the occupants, while there are also others that do no harm. There are gifted people who can see these beings, and they can tell if they are good or bad. Hope what you have there are good ones.

A friend lived in a house that had a "good" ghost (a little girl) and a really "bad" - mean - one, a Confederate soldiers who'd died in a nearby Civil War POW hospital. I simply blocked him out with a mental wall he couldn't breech. Yes, I know, it sounds weird, but that's one of the ways "the gifted" can protect themselves from attacks by unfriendly entities.

I'm not saying I believe in ghosts, but...

I did live in a house where I, and housemates, had strange experiences. For example, one night I kept hearing footsteps upstairs when I knew for a fact no one was home. I had seen every resident leave, and checked to make sure no one had returned unnoticed. The sounds were not just house settling noises - I am familer with those. They were footfalls. That is only one of the several experiences I had. Needless to say, I don't live in that house anymore!

Thank you so much for reading. I myself have never experienced anything that would be considered paranormal, but I have heard many stories like the one you have told me. Enough stories that if one doesn't believe then, well at least wonder.

I live in a very bad haunted house that destroyed my family. We were a very close knit family too. Now we are all fighting all the time. The house was like one of those hauntings to read about and wonder how they did it. I also live in Indiana and I got a hold of three teams here..lol I was denied because they felt the Catholic church needed to be called in. Well they didnt help either. So now we are stuck in a house that everybody but me thinks its ok now? They think all the spirit stuff is gone?? As I sit here typing the spirits are around me. I went from being ok to freezing, shaking, and I feel a spirit.I am exhausted! Our house is similar to the amityville one. I finally read the book and its so much like ours. I have never seen a movie or had knowledge on haunting till this house. For those who think its great to read or live in one, please think again!

good hub, and great writing. Good information for the novice believers, and also a building block for those that are having experiences for the the very first time. I have a ghost child which comes here in visitation. His name is Jacob and he was 12 years old when he had died in the early 1920's. I gleaned this by EVP sessions and using a digital camera to capture some pictures. Again great hub, and look forward do reading more from you.
